What Should You Test in Running and Training Shirt Fabric?

Test running and training shirt fabric for wash stability, colourfastness, surface durability and strength, then add moisture, air-permeability or stretch testing according to the garment. Running briefs may emphasise sustained sweat handling; fitted gym tops may need closer recovery and abrasion checks. Neither category has one universal test package or pass threshold.

A “moisture-wicking” label does not tell you whether a shirt dries quickly, stays comfortable when wet or survives repeated use. Start with the garment's likely problems, then choose tests that answer them.

What should the test brief include?

State the activity, fit, climate, care instructions and intended claims. Identify fibre composition, construction, GSM, colour, finish and sample batch. Note mesh panels, prints and areas likely to touch packs, benches or equipment.

Are wicking, drying and breathability the same thing?

No. They describe different transport processes, so a strong result in one does not establish the others.

Wicking concerns liquid movement. AATCC TM197-2022 assesses transport in vertically positioned fabric specimens. Water moving along fabric is not the same as water leaving it.

Liquid moisture management concerns the fabric's handling of liquid water. AATCC TM195-2011e2(2017)e5 evaluates this behaviour. For a two-sided construction, identify the intended skin side and ask for the relevant component results, not only a headline index.

Drying concerns moisture leaving the fabric. ISO 17617:2014 assesses drying performance. A quick-dry claim needs relevant drying evidence; a wicking result alone is insufficient. Compare candidates using the same method and conditions.

Air permeability concerns airflow through fabric, measured by methods such as ISO 9237:1995. Include pressure difference, test area and units when comparing results. Air permeability is not water-vapour transfer or an overall comfort score. Define what “breathable” means in the product brief before choosing evidence.

Can a moisture-management score predict wet cling?

Not on its own. In a 2023 study by Gao, Deaton and Barker, researchers measured friction between selected knits and a sweating skin simulant. In that limited sample set, conventional moisture measures did not show statistically significant correlations with wet-cling force.

The study does not make wicking tests useless or establish a universal acceptance method. It supports a narrower point: routine moisture data may miss a wearing problem.

Use controlled wear comparisons as supplementary development evidence, recording activity, conditions and wet discomfort. They cannot replace required laboratory testing. Our wet-cling article explores this research in more detail.

Which tests address movement and friction?

ISO 13938-2:2019 measures pneumatic bursting strength and expansion. This provides structural evidence for knits, but it does not validate seams, abrasion resistance or a complete garment.

For surface durability, distinguish ISO 12945-2:2020 pilling assessment from ISO 12947-2:2016 abrasion breakdown. A shirt can look worn before it develops a hole. Record assessment stages and preparation so comparisons remain meaningful.

For fitted or elastane-containing tops, assess recovery as well as extension. ISO 20932-1:2018, with its applicable Amendment 1:2021, addresses elasticity and related properties. “Stretches far” does not establish “returns to shape.”

Review vulnerable mesh, panel joins and contact zones separately where appropriate. Testing the strongest, uninterrupted piece of body fabric may leave the garment's weakest area unexplored.

Will the shirt retain its dimensions and colour?

Match testing to the proposed care instructions. ISO 6330:2021 supplies washing and drying procedures; ISO 5077:2007 addresses dimensional change after the specified treatment.

Ask for lengthwise and widthwise results, cycle count and wash appearance. Inspect panel distortion, neck binding and prints on garments too. A flat-dried fabric result cannot substantiate tumble-dry performance.

For colour, ISO 105-E04:2013 addresses perspiration exposure, while ISO 105-X12:2016 addresses rubbing. Discuss both risks for dark, next-to-skin or contrast-colour products. Neither result substitutes for laundering colourfastness or validates every print application.

How should running and gym priorities differ?

Use this as a product-development comparison, not a prescribed package. Fit and actual use can change the priorities.

How can you avoid paying for unnecessary tests?

First cover applicable customer, market and contract requirements. Then prioritise likely failures and evidence for the claims the brand will use. Do not buy a broad “performance package” without checking what each item answers.

Traceable screening can narrow early candidates. Once construction, colour and finish are agreed, confirm the critical properties at the appropriate approval stage. Changes before bulk production should trigger a relevance review, not an automatic all-or-nothing retest.

Frequently asked questions

Does moisture-wicking mean quick-drying?

No. Wicking describes liquid movement; drying describes moisture leaving the fabric. Use evidence matched to each claim and compare results under equivalent conditions.

Does every training shirt need stretch testing?

Not necessarily. Fit, construction, buyer requirements and stretch claims determine its relevance. Fitted elastane tops deserve closer recovery assessment than a loose, non-stretch shirt.

Is a fabric report enough to approve the finished shirt?

Not always. Seams, mesh panels, trims and prints can introduce additional risks. Agree which garment-level checks are needed alongside fabric testing.
